Grand Forks, N.D. – Gusty storms and lingering smoke are poised to disrupt travel, air quality, and outdoor plans Monday across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, wildfire smoke will settle back into the area Monday afternoon, reducing visibility and air quality across northeast North Dakota and west-central Minnesota. At the same time, severe thunderstorms are likely to develop after 4 p.m., especially along Highway 2 and the Grand Forks–East Grand Forks corridor. The risk is categorized as Level 1 of 5, with hazards including 60 mph wind gusts, hail, and localized flash flooding.

Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and secure loose outdoor items. Residents with respiratory issues should limit time outside due to reduced air quality, especially in areas like Nelson, Walsh, and Polk counties.

By Monday night, storms are expected to intensify between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. before tapering off into Tuesday morning. Gusts could exceed 60 mph in spots, especially near Devils Lake and Cavalier. Spotter activation is not expected Sunday but could be needed Monday night.
