Portland, Oregon – Oregon’s summer heat is turning dangerous — and it’s only getting started.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for Sunday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with highs expected to reach 95°F across Portland and nearby cities. But the bigger threat comes Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening, when an Extreme Heat Watch takes over the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Portland, there is a 40-50% chance temperatures will remain above 95°F Tuesday night and a 10% chance lows stay above 70°F — offering little overnight relief. The hottest zones will be the Portland/Vancouver Metro and Columbia River Gorge, where triple-digit highs are likely.

Impacts include an increased risk of heat-related illness, particularly for vulnerable groups like children, older adults, and outdoor workers. Avoid peak afternoon sun, stay in air-conditioned places, and drink water frequently. Officials urge residents to check on neighbors and never leave children or pets in vehicles.

From Salem to Hood River, emergency agencies recommend shifting outdoor work to early morning and limiting strenuous activity during the day. Wildfire smoke may worsen air quality, especially near dry brush areas and active burn zones.
