Charleston, West Virginia – Afternoon thunderstorms threaten to disrupt travel and outdoor plans across Charleston on Wednesday, July 9th, as West Virginia enters another active stretch of summer weather. Residents and commuters along I-64 and throughout Kanawha County should be prepared for sudden downpours and possible delays during the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in Charleston after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with skies remaining mostly cloudy and highs near 89°F. Localized heavy rain could make travel hazardous, especially during peak traffic. Light winds may reduce severe storm risk, but ponding on roads and low visibility are still concerns.

Thursday keeps the region unsettled, with a slight chance of showers early, followed by another round of thunderstorms and showers after 11 a.m. Daytime highs hover near 88°F, and the chance of precipitation remains at 40 percent. The threat of pop-up storms continues into Thursday night, especially after 11 p.m., before tapering off into Friday.

Friday brings a brief window of sun but another 40 percent chance of showers and storms after 2 p.m., with temperatures climbing toward 89°F. Weekend heat intensifies, with Saturday and Sunday highs near 90°F and storms returning, especially late Sunday and into Monday, when the chance of rain reaches 60 percent.
