Boston, Massachusetts – Thunderstorms sweeping across southern New England Tuesday afternoon could trigger localized flash flooding, especially in urban centers like Boston, Providence, and Hartford through early Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch is now in effect for Connecticut, Rhode Island, and portions of south-central and southeast Massachusetts from 2 p.m. Tuesday through 2 a.m. Wednesday. Meteorologists warn that rain could fall at rates of one to two inches per hour, overwhelming drainage systems in city neighborhoods and along major roadways.

Key routes such as I-95, I-91, and I-93 may experience sudden water buildup, creating dangerous travel conditions for evening commuters. Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roads and never attempt to drive through standing water. Residents in flood-prone basements and low-lying communities should move valuables to higher ground and ensure sump pumps are working.

Communities including Worcester, New Haven, Brockton, and Fall River face an increased risk of flooding similar to last summer’s severe rain events. Prepare for brief but intense downpours, possible street closures, and power outages in some areas.

The Flood Watch will remain in effect until 2 a.m. Wednesday, with more advisories possible if thunderstorms persist into the overnight hours.
