New York, NY – Scattered thunderstorms could hammer the New York City area and surrounding suburbs Tuesday afternoon into the evening, bringing damaging wind gusts and flash flood risks just in time for the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, storms ahead of a cold front may produce wind gusts over 58 mph, potentially downing trees and power lines across NYC, northeastern New Jersey, and the Lower Hudson Valley. Rainfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour in localized areas, increasing the risk of urban flooding and rapid creek rises.

The highest risk zones include Paterson, Newark, and Newburgh, where power outages and hazardous road conditions are possible. Parts of Westchester and Rockland Counties could also see brief torrential downpours that overwhelm storm drains. No watches have been issued yet, but a Severe Thunderstorm Watch may be posted later today.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware this afternoon, especially if traveling. Secure outdoor items, charge devices in case of outages, and avoid flooded roads.

This will be the final update for this event unless conditions worsen. Stay tuned to NWS New York for potential alerts through Tuesday night.
