Sioux Falls, S.D. – Scattered thunderstorms could return to eastern South Dakota late Wednesday, bringing the potential for 1-inch hail and 50 mph winds from Sioux Falls to Brookings.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a round of isolated storms is possible Wednesday morning, mainly producing small hail. A stronger round may redevelop in the late afternoon or evening, posing a marginal risk for large hail, gusty winds, and brief flash flooding across cities like Mitchell, Yankton, and Sioux City. The tornado risk remains very low.
Communities along I-29 should remain alert Wednesday afternoon, especially during evening travel. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated cells may intensify. The risk of large hail and strong wind gusts will be highest from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
If you’re planning to be outdoors, have a way to receive alerts and know where to seek shelter. This pattern resembles past early-July setups with short bursts of heat and storm activity.
Storm chances diminish Thursday, but heavier rain could return by the Fourth of July. Additional alerts may be issued by Wednesday afternoon.
