Jackson, Mississippi – Dangerous heat is gripping much of Mississippi today, with heat index values climbing to 105°F and temperatures hovering in the mid-90s across central and western parts of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Level 1 Heat Advisory remains in effect, warning of increased heat stress and possible heat exhaustion for those spending extended time outdoors. The advisory stretches from Greenville and Vicksburg to Brookhaven and Hattiesburg, where residents are urged to stay cool and hydrated. Scattered showers and storms could pop up this afternoon into the early evening, offering limited relief.

Cities like Jackson, Yazoo City, and Natchez may see oppressive humidity during peak hours, particularly between 1 and 6 p.m. Residents are encouraged to take breaks in the shade, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and never leave pets or people inside vehicles.

While today’s heat level is classified as “Limited,” prolonged exposure can still be dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups. Showers may return tonight, but additional advisories are possible if the pattern continues into the weekend.
