Gretna, Louisiana – Strong thunderstorms could soak much of southeastern Louisiana Sunday afternoon, bringing downpours, lightning, and traffic disruptions to the Gretna area just as weekend travel ramps up.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans/Baton Rouge, a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected Sunday, June 29, mainly after 1 p.m. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch are possible, with localized heavier totals. Winds will shift from light and variable to south near 10 mph, potentially affecting travel on Highway 90, I-10, and surface streets across Jefferson Parish.

Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours and check real-time traffic updates. Flood-prone areas could experience brief ponding or slower drainage. Lightning remains a threat to outdoor plans — stay indoors if thunder roars.

Storm chances ease slightly Monday but return Monday night into Tuesday with renewed thunderstorm activity and rain totals nearing another half-inch. Highs each day remain near 90°F with muggy lows around 76°F.

As the week continues, Wednesday and Thursday both bring scattered storms and highs in the 91°F range. The 4th of July forecast (Friday) currently includes showers and storms under mostly sunny skies — those planning outdoor events should monitor updates closely.
