Milwaukee County, WI – Commuters traveling through Milwaukee County should prepare for significant delays along I-894 this week as final resurfacing and bridge reconstruction work continues between 84th and 35th streets.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), the long-term rehabilitation project is now entering its final stages, with crews actively working on major improvements including median and shoulder reconstruction, the resurfacing of freeway lanes and ramps, and the replacement of the WIS 36 (Loomis Road) bridge. The project began in late 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2025.

Traffic impacts include extended ramp closures, overnight shutdowns for paving, and occasional full freeway closures on weekends. WisDOT has advised that all work is weather dependent and subject to change. An estimated 125,000 vehicles travel this corridor daily, making it one of the most heavily used freeway bypasses around Milwaukee, connecting interstates I-94, I-43, and I-41.

Other updates include box culvert repairs at Honey Creek and improvements to lighting, drainage systems, guardrails, and signage throughout the project zone.

Drivers are urged to monitor 511wi.gov for real-time traffic updates and detour routes. Officials emphasize the importance of slowing down and exercising caution in active construction zones.

The I-894 rehabilitation project reflects a significant investment in southeastern Wisconsin’s infrastructure and aims to enhance long-term traffic flow and safety in one of the state’s busiest travel corridors.
