Batavia, Ill. — The City of Batavia encouraged all residents to plan ahead for the Fourth of July by announcing a traffic campaign the Batavia Police Department is joining.

The campaign is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Illinois Department of Transportation. The Illinois State Police is teaming up with more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments to enforce impaired driving and seatbelts. The campaign runs through July 7.

Batavia Police said that extra patrols would be out on the roads looking for impaired drivers, speeding, distracted drivers and seat belt violations. Impaired driving can be due to alcohol, cannabis or other drugs.

The police encouraged people to designate a sober driver, keep friends from driving impaired and buckle up before taking to the roads.

“Please plan for a sober ride home before you leave the house,” said Batavia Police Chief Eric Blowers in the news release. “Celebrate responsibly — your safety and the safety of others depends on it.”
