Albuquerque, N.M. – Parts of eastern New Mexico face a marginal risk of severe storms this afternoon, while record-breaking heat is already gripping much of the state and intensifying through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, severe storms may develop between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. MDT Friday, especially across the far eastern plains including Clovis and Clayton. While the tornado threat remains very low, there’s a slight chance of large hail and damaging winds. Storms will move eastward quickly, with the highest impact window late this afternoon.

Meanwhile, heat is the dominant story across central and southern New Mexico. Temperatures in Roswell could reach 106°F by Tuesday, with Socorro, Tucumcari, and Albuquerque pushing 100°F or more. Sunday and Monday are expected to challenge daily high temperature records.

Officials warn of an elevated risk for heat-related illnesses. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

The extreme heat is expected to persist through at least Tuesday, and additional heat advisories are possible.
