Boston, MA – Marine operators across New England’s offshore waters face hazardous conditions Saturday as gale-force winds whip through the region, building seas up to 15 feet and cutting visibility to under one nautical mile.

According to the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center, gale warnings are in effect from the Gulf of Maine to Hudson and Baltimore Canyons, including Georges Bank and south of Long Island. Winds are expected to reach 30 to 40 knots at times, with scattered thunderstorms reducing visibility and worsening conditions.

In the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank, waves are forecast to build from 4 feet this morning to 14 feet by this evening. Waters south of Montauk Point and through the offshore zones east of 69°W will also see winds peak at 35 to 40 knots, with dangerous seas and embedded convection.

Mariners should avoid unnecessary travel and secure vessels. Commercial routes and fishing operations may face temporary disruptions, especially in fog-prone areas near the Great South Channel.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve beginning Sunday, though elevated seas will persist through early Monday. Additional advisories may follow depending on storm development.
