Kankakee County COVID-19 active cases up nearly 600% this month

KANKAKEE – Three new deaths have been reported from COVID-19 in Kankakee, marking the most single-day deaths announced in the County. To date, 85 residents have now died after contracting COVID-19 in Kankakee County. 

Since Monday, over 700 new cases have been announced in Kankakee County, which had a rolling seven-day positivity rate of 17.5% Tuesday, matching Will and Region 7’s overall positivity on the day. Active cases locally have gone from 331 on October 9th to 1,976 on November 10th, an increase of 596% in cases in just over 30 days.

“We’re all looking, hopefully, to a better tomorrow, even as public health experts warn of new waves of the virus as more people spend time inside in the months to come,” Governor J.B. Pritzker said during a Tuesday afternoon briefing on COVID-19. “We all want this to be over, but we need to gird ourselves for winter because it’s not over yet.”

There have now been nearly 1,600 cases (1,598) locally in Kankakee since November 1st.  Tuesday afternoon, 59 residents were hospitalized in Kankakee County hospitals, setting a new area record.  Since October 9th, 11 residents have lost their battle with the virus as hospitalizations increased 180% in Kankakee County in the last month. 

The County is set to enter TIER 2 mitigations at midnight tonight.
