Springfield, Mo. – Strong thunderstorms could spark damaging winds and hail across parts of Missouri today and tonight, prompting a weather alert for much of the southern half of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, isolated strong to severe storms are possible through late Sunday, with primary hazards including wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as quarters. The area at greatest risk includes cities such as Springfield, Branson, Joplin, and Rolla, stretching from the Ozarks into southeast Missouri.
Storms are expected to develop in the afternoon and continue into the evening hours. While not all areas will see severe weather, any storm that does turn severe could down trees, damage roofs, and disrupt travel, especially along I-44 and U.S. Highway 60. Hail could damage vehicles and crops, particularly in rural counties like Howell, Texas, and Wright.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially if planning to be outdoors or traveling. Charging devices and preparing emergency kits is advised in case of power outages.
More updates will follow if storm threats intensify. A marginal risk remains in place through tonight.
