Albuquerque, N.M. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across eastern New Mexico Sunday afternoon, bringing large hail and damaging winds to areas from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the I-25 corridor and the East-Central Plains.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a slight risk for severe weather continues through 9 p.m. Sunday, especially across Curry and Roosevelt counties. A marginal risk returns Monday from 2 p.m. to midnight, mainly affecting far eastern counties like Quay, Curry, and Roosevelt.
Storms will develop daily this week, with a wetter weather pattern taking hold from Monday through Friday. Afternoon thunderstorms will initiate near noon and move eastward into the evening hours, particularly along and east of the Rio Grande Valley.
Western New Mexico may see dry thunderstorms and virga showers early in the week, increasing the potential for lightning-started fires. While the overall flood threat remains low, minor flash flooding is possible near recent burn scars.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor plans during peak storm hours, secure loose objects, and monitor updates at weather.gov/abq. More storms are likely through the week, especially in eastern areas.
