Lubbock, Texas – Damaging thunderstorms are expected to sweep across the South Plains and southern Texas Panhandle beginning around 3 p.m. Sunday, bringing wind gusts up to 80 mph and hail as large as softballs.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, the most intense storms will develop from late afternoon through midnight, with areas including Lubbock, Matador, Post, and Childress facing the highest risk. A Level 3 “Enhanced” risk covers much of the region, with isolated tornadoes also possible.

Cities such as Morton, Aspermont, and Dimmit may experience brief power outages, downed tree limbs, and dangerous road conditions due to large hail and high winds. Residents are urged to avoid travel during storms, secure outdoor items, and stay indoors away from windows. Emergency kits and fully charged devices are recommended in case of outages.

This severe weather pattern marks one of the most significant thunderstorm threats of the month in West Texas.

Further warnings or watches may be issued as storms develop. Residents should monitor NOAA Weather Radio and local alerts through the evening.
