Newport, North Carolina – Thunderstorms may dampen Memorial Day celebrations across Carteret County as a fast-moving system brings heavy rain and lightning to the area by late morning Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, showers and possibly a thunderstorm will move into Newport before 11 a.m., with heavier rainfall and storms expected between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Winds could gust up to 21 mph, and up to an inch of rainfall is possible throughout the day. Travelers should expect delays along NC-24 and secondary roads as visibility drops and ponding becomes a hazard.
Monday night turns mostly cloudy and quiet with lows near 60°F, but the lull won’t last long. Rain chances increase again midweek, with Wednesday likely bringing the heaviest follow-up rain event. Thunderstorms are expected after 2 p.m. Wednesday with a 70% chance of rain and highs around 80°F.
Thursday remains unsettled with more showers and storms possible, while Friday offers a slim chance for afternoon rain. Saturday clears slightly, though isolated storms may still pop up as temperatures climb to the mid-80s.
