Springfield, Ill. – Memorial Day in Central Illinois will feel more like early spring than late May, with highs 10 degrees below normal and a chance of scattered afternoon showers, especially from Macomb to Effingham.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Memorial Day will remain mostly dry for outdoor plans, though isolated rain may develop southeast of the Illinois River Valley during the afternoon. Temperatures will hover between 64 and 69 degrees, with widespread cloud cover keeping things cool.

Light rain is expected to return Monday evening, but the most active weather arrives Tuesday, when thunderstorms could bring heavier showers across central and southeastern counties. Cities including Decatur, Charleston, and Springfield may see storms by midday Tuesday, with a 60% chance of precipitation.

Drivers are urged to stay alert during Tuesday commutes, as wet roads and brief downpours may reduce visibility. Residents should keep umbrellas handy and monitor weather updates, especially if planning travel between Monday night and Tuesday.

Cooler-than-average conditions are likely to persist through Wednesday, with highs climbing only into the low 70s. Additional updates and any new advisories will be issued by the NWS as the system develops.
