Amarillo, Texas – Drivers in the northern Texas Panhandle may encounter patchy dense fog through 9 a.m. Sunday, with visibility in some areas dipping as low as a quarter-mile, especially near Guymon and Stratford.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, visibility at the Guymon airport was around 3 miles early Sunday but is expected to decrease further around sunrise. Most areas will likely stay above half a mile in visibility, but a few pockets in the far north may drop below 1/4 mile, creating hazardous travel conditions during the early morning commute.
Cities including Guymon, Stratford, Gruver, and Perryton are under a low visibility advisory. The most significant impacts are expected between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m., with the fog lifting by mid-morning. Drivers in Dumas, Dalhart, and Canadian should also remain alert while traveling on Highways 54 and 287.
Travelers are urged to leave early, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra time. If possible, delay non-essential travel until after 9 a.m. when conditions are expected to improve.
Fog-related travel risks may return overnight if humidity remains high. Stay tuned for updates from NWS Amarillo.
