Grand Junction, Colorado – Strong winds and dangerously dry air are fueling critical fire conditions across western Colorado, with a Red Flag Warning in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday for areas below 6,000 feet, including Grand Junction and the Lower Colorado River Valley.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, southwest winds between 10 to 20 mph—with gusts reaching 35 mph—will combine with humidity levels as low as 7% to create ideal conditions for rapid fire spread. The warning applies to Fire Weather Zone 203 and comes as part of a broader hazardous weather outlook for northwest, southwest, and central Colorado, as well as parts of Utah.

Localized storms may skirt northeast Utah and northwest Colorado, but any rainfall will be limited. Gusty outflow winds near storms could reach up to 45 mph. Isolated lightning strikes pose added fire-starting risk across dry terrain.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and be cautious with any ignition sources. With conditions expected to shift by sunset, the threat will diminish—but fire danger may return with dry weather continuing into early next week.

More alerts are possible Sunday as thunderstorms develop north of Highway 50.
