Albuquerque, N.M. – Gusty winds, hail, and lightning could impact parts of eastern New Mexico Sunday evening as a round of strong to marginally severe thunderstorms moves through the region between 4 p.m. and 2 a.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, areas from Tucumcari and Clayton down to Clovis and Roswell face a 30–40% chance for severe weather. Risks include cloud-to-ground lightning, small hail, and wind gusts strong enough to blow around unsecured outdoor objects or generate blowing dust along highways.

Storms are expected to develop along and east of the central mountain chain, favoring late afternoon and evening hours. Far eastern zones may see activity linger into the early morning hours Monday. Rainfall totals could range from 0.01 to 0.50 inches, with locally heavier amounts possible—especially near burn scar zones or dry arroyos.

Travelers on U.S. 54, U.S. 60, and I-40 through the eastern plains should prepare for sudden changes in visibility and brief heavy downpours. Residents are urged to secure loose items, avoid flooded low spots, and stay alert to warnings.

Additional storms are possible through midweek, with daily afternoon rain chances continuing across the region.
