Grand Rapids, Michigan – A chilly end to the weekend could surprise West Michigan residents, as patchy frost returns Sunday night—just hours before Memorial Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in effect for much of southwest Lower Michigan, including Kent, Barry, and Ottawa counties. Temperatures are expected to dip into the low 40s Sunday night, with calm winds and clear skies creating ideal conditions for frost formation, especially in rural areas.

Travelers and gardeners should take precautions. If you’re planning early Memorial Day activities or traveling along US-131 or I-96 late Sunday, be aware of slick spots in low-lying or shaded areas. Sensitive plants should be covered or brought indoors to avoid damage.

Memorial Day (Monday) itself will bring more sunshine and warmer temperatures, with highs around 71°F. But the warming trend is short-lived. Monday night turns cloudy, and by Tuesday, clouds and showers begin to move in. Daytime highs will hover near 70°F through midweek, though cooler overnight lows continue—Tuesday night may drop into the mid-50s.

Looking ahead, Wednesday through Friday offers a mixed bag. A chance of showers continues both day and night, with Thursday expected to be the warmest at around 72°F. By Friday, skies should clear with partly sunny conditions returning.
