Kansas City, Missouri – Flash flooding and dangerous driving conditions could impact holiday travel from Kansas City to Springfield through early Tuesday as multiple rounds of heavy rain move across Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, rainfall totals between 2 to 5 inches are possible, especially in areas south of I-70. The heaviest rain is expected from Friday afternoon through Sunday night, with persistent showers lingering into Tuesday morning. River flooding is likely along smaller streams and rivers already running high, particularly near lakes and low-lying areas.

Cities including Clinton, Butler, Sedalia, and Pittsburg are under heightened risk, with some areas forecast to receive 3 to 4 inches or more. Interstate 49 and Highway 54 could see localized flooding, especially during overnight hours. The NWS has also issued a marginal risk for severe weather Friday evening and again Saturday, with potential for hail and damaging winds in central Missouri.

Travelers are urged to avoid water-covered roads, delay non-essential trips, and monitor local alerts. Residents near rivers or streams should prepare for rapid rises in water levels.

Flood watches remain in effect through Tuesday morning, and additional warnings may be issued as the system evolves.
