Sacramento, California – Fire danger is on the rise across the Sacramento Valley and Delta today as gusty winds and critically low humidity increase the chance of wildfires.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, south winds of 10–15 mph with gusts reaching 25 mph are expected throughout Wednesday, especially in the Delta region. Minimum daytime humidity is forecast between 15–30%, with some areas dipping lower. Elevated fire weather conditions are in effect for locations below 1,000 feet.

Residents in the Valley and Delta are urged to keep vehicles off dry grass, properly dispose of cigarettes and matches, and avoid outdoor equipment that can generate sparks. These precautions are especially important during windy periods, when fires can ignite and spread quickly.

While the overall fire weather risk remains “minor,” officials warn that these conditions make fire starts more likely. It’s the first fire weather alert of the season for the region, a reminder of how quickly risk can escalate even in May.

Elevated fire conditions will continue through Wednesday evening. Additional advisories may be issued if winds persist or humidity drops further.
