Providence, Rhode Island – Heavy rainfall and gusty winds could disrupt plans across Rhode Island on Friday as a powerful storm system pushes through the region.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms will develop Friday afternoon and continue into the evening, with peak intensity likely after 2 p.m. Rainfall amounts may reach 1 to 2 inches, especially around Providence and along the I-95 corridor. Isolated storms could bring wind gusts up to 32 mph. Drivers should use caution during the evening commute, as brief ponding and reduced visibility are likely. Patchy fog may also develop, reducing travel safety.

Clouds will linger into Friday night with a 40% chance of showers persisting into early Saturday. But there’s good news for holiday travelers: drier conditions are expected to return by Saturday afternoon, with skies turning partly sunny and highs reaching near 60°F.

Sunday brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 64°F — ideal for barbecues or beach plans. Memorial Day Monday will start clear, with light winds and temps rising near 72°F by the afternoon, offering a warm kickoff to summer.

Looking ahead, Tuesday will be the hottest day of the stretch, climbing to 83°F under mostly cloudy skies. By Wednesday, cooler air returns with a chance of showers and a high near 66°F.

Stay weather-aware Friday and check for updated advisories. Thunderstorm threats may return early next week.
