Birmingham, Ala. – Tornadoes, damaging winds up to 70 mph, and hail the size of golf balls could sweep across northern and central Alabama beginning late Tuesday afternoon, prompting a Level 3 severe storm risk across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, storms could begin developing as early as 5 p.m. Tuesday in areas like Hamilton and Gadsden, spreading southeast through Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Clanton by midnight. The threat zone extends along the I-85 corridor, with severe weather possible until 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Cities under the greatest risk include Birmingham, Hoover, and Tuscaloosa, with tornado potential highest in the Level 3 zone (risk level 3 of 5). Strong gusts and large hail may impact travel on major roadways including I-65, I-59, and I-20. Farther south, areas like Montgomery and Auburn are under a lower but still present threat, mainly in the early morning hours.
Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive alerts, charge devices, and stay near a sturdy shelter after 5 p.m. Tuesday. Evening sports events and commutes may be disrupted.
