Davenport, Iowa – A slow-moving storm system will drench eastern Iowa and western Illinois with heavy rain beginning Monday afternoon, bringing potential flooding concerns and storm risks into Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, widespread rainfall will develop Monday evening, intensifying overnight. Some areas may see rates up to 1 inch per hour, with the heaviest rain expected from late Monday into early Tuesday. Probabilities of receiving at least 2 inches of rain are over 80% for cities like Burlington, Keokuk, and Galesburg.
Isolated severe storms are possible, particularly late Monday into early Tuesday. The Storm Prediction Center places the region under a Level 1 risk for severe weather, with strong wind gusts and brief hail possible.
The soaking rain will benefit dry soils, but prolonged downpours could lead to rises on tributaries feeding the Mississippi River. Urban and low-lying areas in Moline, Dubuque, and Cedar Rapids should monitor for localized flooding.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways, secure outdoor items, and check weather alerts regularly. The rain is expected to taper off by Wednesday morning, but additional advisories may be issued as river levels respond.
