Binghamton, N.Y. – Frost-sensitive plants and gardens around Binghamton could be in trouble Monday night as temperatures drop near freezing once again.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a cold pocket will move across central New York and northeast Pennsylvania after sunset Monday, pushing temperatures into the 30s—and even the upper 20s in low-lying valleys. This brings a renewed risk for frost formation, particularly for rural areas along Route 17 and Interstate 81.

Residents should prepare now by covering plants, disconnecting outdoor hoses, and checking on vulnerable livestock or outdoor pets. While spotter activation isn’t expected, further frost or freeze advisories may be issued if confidence in the drop increases.

The day leading into the chill—Monday, May 19—will feel deceptively pleasant. Expect mostly sunny skies and highs near 61°F, but bring a jacket for Monday night as lows plummet to 39°F in the city and colder in surrounding counties.

The week ahead:

  • Tuesday: Sunny and slightly warmer with a high of 63°F.
  • Tuesday Night: Chance of showers returns late, low near 45°F.
  • Wednesday: Rain becomes likely (90% chance), high around 57°F.
  • Thursday: Continued showers with temps in the mid-50s.
  • Friday: Mostly cloudy, slight chance of rain, high near 57°F.
