Watertown, N.Y. – A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms is ripping through parts of northern and central New York this morning, bringing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail ahead of the 8 a.m. commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the storm was located around 7 a.m. near Pulaski and Stony Point, moving east at 50 mph. Jefferson, Lewis, and northeastern Oswego counties are all under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 8 a.m.
The storm threatens areas including Three Mile Bay, Montario Point, Lacona, Turin, and La Fargeville, with damage to roofs, trees, and siding likely. Interstate 81 drivers between exits 37 and 52 should expect poor visibility and possible debris on the roadway.
Residents are urged to take shelter in an interior room and avoid travel if possible. Power outages and falling branches are possible throughout the morning.
The National Weather Service will issue updates as conditions develop. Additional warnings may follow as the line moves eastward through the region.
