Wichita, Kansas – A stretch of dangerous weather is bearing down on Kansas, with severe thunderstorms expected each day from Saturday night through Monday. The National Weather Service in Wichita warns that storms tonight could bring golf ball-sized hail and 60 mph winds, with the threat escalating Sunday and Monday to include large hail, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes.
According to the NWS, Saturday night’s storms are most likely between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday, particularly across the Flint Hills and into southeastern Kansas. Coffeyville (55% chance), Chanute (54%), and Emporia (40%) face the highest odds of storms tonight, while Wichita has a 27% chance.
Sunday’s risk increases dramatically, with much of eastern Kansas under a Level 2 or 3 risk for severe storms. Tennis ball-sized hail, 70 mph winds, and isolated tornadoes are possible by afternoon and evening. Cities including Wichita, Emporia, and Winfield are in the enhanced threat zone.
Monday brings another round of severe weather, focused along and east of Interstate 135. Large hail and a tornado or two are possible in areas like Hutchinson, Eureka, and Coffeyville.
Residents should have multiple ways to receive warnings and stay weather-aware through Monday night. Additional watches and warnings are likely as conditions evolve.
