Howell, Utah – A minor earthquake struck northwestern Utah Friday afternoon, briefly rattling residents near Howell without causing damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 2.7 quake occurred at 12:33 p.m. MDT about 8 kilometers northwest of Howell in Box Elder County. The earthquake registered at a depth of 14.8 kilometers and was reviewed and confirmed by seismologists.

While no injuries or infrastructure damage were reported, at least one person submitted a “Did You Feel It?” report to USGS. The area, located roughly 100 miles northwest of Salt Lake City, sits near known fault lines and sees occasional minor seismic activity.

Residents across Box Elder County may have felt a light jolt, especially those in low-rise buildings or mobile homes. Emergency officials advise keeping emergency kits stocked and reviewing home safety plans even after small quakes.

This event marks one of several minor tremors in northern Utah this spring, but geologists say such activity remains typical for the region.

The USGS will continue to monitor for any aftershocks or seismic changes. No further advisories are expected unless conditions change.
