Springfield, Ill. – A tornado watch is now in effect for 38 counties across central and southern Illinois until 10 p.m. Friday, as severe storms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail track across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch—number 265—was issued at 3 p.m. CDT and includes cities such as Champaign, Springfield, Carbondale, and Effingham. The most at-risk areas stretch from Vermilion and Logan counties in the east to Pulaski and Alexander in the south.

Residents in counties including Franklin, Jefferson, and Williamson should remain weather-aware into the evening. Storms may intensify quickly, with isolated tornadoes possible, especially in areas along and south of I-70. Emergency management officials urge people to have multiple ways to receive warnings and to avoid travel if storms approach.

Power outages and downed trees are possible as gusts could exceed 60 mph. Mobile homes, outdoor events, and high-profile vehicles are especially vulnerable.

This marks one of the most widespread tornado watches of the spring so far in Illinois. Similar watches are also active in neighboring Missouri and Indiana.

The tornado watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. Friday. Additional watches or warnings may be issued as storms develop.
