Washington, D.C. – Strong storms could disrupt evening plans across the nation’s capital as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. Friday, bringing threats of damaging winds, hail, and brief downpours.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Washington, D.C. is under Watch 263, issued at 2:20 p.m. EDT. The primary hazards include wind gusts up to 60 mph and isolated hail, especially during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
Residents across all D.C. neighborhoods should stay weather-aware and avoid outdoor activities through the evening commute. Trees weakened by recent rainfall may be more prone to falling, increasing the risk of localized power outages and blocked roadways. Metro services may also experience delays if lightning or debris impacts lines.
Officials recommend securing loose outdoor items, charging mobile devices in advance, and having multiple ways to receive alerts. If thunder roars, head indoors immediately.
The threat is expected to taper off after 10 p.m., but additional watches or warnings may be issued as storm cells develop across the Mid-Atlantic.
