Pittsburgh, Pa. – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for 21 counties across Pennsylvania until 10 p.m. Friday, with damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes possible from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg.

According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 263 includes Allegheny, York, and other counties spanning western and central Pennsylvania. Storms developing this afternoon could rapidly intensify, with the greatest risk between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. EDT.

The watch covers key population centers including Pittsburgh, Altoona, and State College. Interstate corridors such as I-76, I-70, and I-99 may see hazardous travel conditions, especially during the evening commute. Emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors during storms, secure outdoor items, and charge mobile devices in case of outages.

Schools, outdoor events, and weekend travel plans may be disrupted across areas like Westmoreland, Cumberland, and Franklin counties. This system arrives with high humidity and instability, increasing the chance for quick-developing cells capable of 60+ mph winds.

Storms are expected to taper off late tonight, but additional watches or warnings may be issued if new activity develops. Residents should monitor local alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
