Chicago, Illinois – Winds topping 50 mph are expected to rip through northern and central Illinois Friday afternoon, threatening power lines, visibility, and travel conditions through midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. to 12 a.m. for counties including Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry, Winnebago, and La Salle. Southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph will intensify during the evening, with higher gusts posing a risk to unsecured objects, tree limbs, and high-profile vehicles.
In rural areas that missed Thursday’s rainfall, officials warn that dry soil may be lofted into the air, significantly reducing visibility along open roads. Areas near Dixon, Pontiac, and Rochelle may be especially prone to blowing dust.
Drivers, particularly those operating trucks, vans, and RVs, are urged to use caution. Residents should secure patio furniture, trash bins, and anything that might become airborne. Minor power outages are possible as tree limbs come down under wind stress.
The advisory covers all of Chicagoland, including suburbs from Naperville to Waukegan. Winds are expected to taper off overnight, but further advisories may follow if damage reports escalate.
