Nashville, Tenn. – Strong thunderstorms packing quarter- to golf ball-sized hail and damaging winds could slam into Tennessee starting at 4 p.m. Thursday, with a heightened risk for severe weather extending into Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, scattered storms are expected to develop Thursday evening and continue overnight, bringing the potential for hail and gusts over 50 mph. Tornado risk is low tonight, but that could change by Friday if isolated cells form ahead of a larger storm line.

By Friday afternoon and evening, a more widespread and intense round of storms is likely, especially after 7 p.m. Much of central and northern Tennessee—including Nashville, Clarksville, Cookeville, and Murfreesboro—is under a Level 3 (Enhanced) to Level 2 (Slight) risk. Winds could exceed 65 mph, and hail may reach golf ball size in the hardest-hit areas.

Residents should secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and have multiple ways to receive alerts overnight. Travel may be impacted Friday evening, especially along I-40 and I-24 corridors.

Severe weather alerts remain in effect through at least 5 a.m. Saturday. Stay weather-aware, and check for updates as new warnings may be issued.
