Omaha, Nebraska – Drivers and residents across northeast Nebraska and west central Iowa should brace for gusty winds up to 50 mph through 8 p.m. Wednesday, prompting a Wind Advisory and raising concerns about fire danger and hazardous travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, sustained west winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts nearing 50 mph are expected throughout the day. The advisory spans cities including Norfolk, Wayne, Sioux City, and Denison, where unsecured objects may become airborne and high-profile vehicles could struggle on open roads.
Transportation officials are urging caution along stretches of I-29 and Highway 20, especially for semis, RVs, and other tall vehicles. Local fire departments are also monitoring dry conditions, warning that the strong winds could quickly spread any outdoor flames.
Residents should secure trash bins, lawn furniture, and other loose items to prevent property damage. Drivers are advised to keep both hands on the wheel and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind hours.
The Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m., with conditions expected to gradually ease overnight. Additional advisories may be issued if gusts persist into Thursday.
