Jackson, Kentucky – Strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail are expected to develop across eastern Kentucky this afternoon, prompting a Marginal Risk alert from the Storm Prediction Center.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, areas west of a line from Hazard to Jackson to Mount Sterling are under a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe storms through the evening hours. The main concerns include isolated wind damage and hail large enough to impact vehicles and rooftops.

Cities like London, Somerset, and Elizabethtown could see rounds of heavy rainfall, especially in low-lying areas with poor drainage. Localized flooding is possible where repeated downpours occur. Commuters along I-64 and the Mountain Parkway should use caution as conditions may deteriorate quickly.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor weather alerts, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Those in mobile homes or vulnerable structures should be prepared to seek shelter if warnings are issued.

Thunderstorm activity is expected to taper off late Wednesday night, but more alerts could be issued if instability increases.
