Gaylord, Michigan – Severe weather could sweep across most of Michigan beginning Thursday night, with damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning expected into early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, rain and isolated thunder chances persist through Thursday, with highs ranging from 67 to 80 degrees statewide. Conditions will worsen late Thursday as a line of strong to severe storms moves into the region, particularly impacting northern and central counties.

Communities including Traverse City, Alpena, and Grayling should prepare for hazardous travel, possible power outages, and sudden downpours overnight. The NWS warns that storm timing may disrupt early Friday commutes, especially in areas near M-32 and US-131.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and stay weather-aware. If thunder roars, move indoors immediately and avoid driving during peak storm hours. This weather system may be the strongest since early spring, bringing a broader threat zone from the U.P. into central Michigan.

Storm activity is expected to taper by midday Friday, but lingering showers may continue into the afternoon. Additional updates and potential warnings are expected late Thursday.
