Wichita, Kansas – Much of central and southern Kansas is baking under summer-like heat Thursday, with highs soaring into the mid-90s across Wichita, Hutchinson, and Salina. Pratt tops the list at a sweltering 97°F, while cities like Emporia, Eureka, and Russell are also feeling the heat.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the unseasonable warmth will hold through the afternoon before breezy conditions bring modest relief. Highs are expected to dip back into the low to mid-80s by Friday, offering a more typical May feel.
Drivers and outdoor workers in the affected areas should take extra precautions Thursday, including staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. Air conditioning use may spike, and local utilities are advising residents to conserve energy during peak afternoon hours.
By Friday, most cities — including Winfield, Harper, and Coffeyville — will see highs range from 81°F to 86°F under clear skies. This heat burst, while brief, marks one of the warmest stretches so far this spring for much of the region.
Another update will be issued Friday morning if conditions shift or a new advisory is needed.
