Des Moines, Iowa – Central Iowa heads into Thursday under a developing spring weather threat, with large hail, damaging winds, and strong gusts expected along key highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, storms are likely to begin late Wednesday night and continue through Thursday afternoon, especially across the northwest half of the state. The strongest storms may bring wind gusts over 35 mph and hail risks mainly near U.S. Highway 63 and north of Highway 20. Commuters and residents should avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours and secure outdoor items in advance.

Thursday will be warm and windy, with highs reaching 84°F. Winds from the southwest will strengthen throughout the day, reaching sustained speeds of 14 to 22 mph and gusting as high as 33 mph. Spotter activation may be needed Wednesday night into Thursday as conditions intensify.

Friday brings more breezy sunshine with a high near 81°F, while the weekend turns cooler but mostly dry. Saturday offers a break with sunny skies and a high near 74°F before storm chances increase again late Sunday.
