Champaign, Ill. – A surge of unstable air could trigger isolated tornadoes and damaging hail across eastern Illinois and western Indiana Thursday afternoon, prompting elevated concern from emergency managers ahead of the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the risk for severe storms will increase between 2 and 9 p.m. Thursday, with the most intense activity likely along and east of I-57. Cities including Danville, Charleston, and Paris, Illinois, and extending into Terre Haute, Indiana, are under a Level 2 risk for severe weather. Threats include large hail over one inch in diameter, damaging wind gusts, and the potential for isolated tornadoes.

The threat zone aligns with a warm, breezy pattern as temperatures climb into the 90s. Storms may begin as scattered cells before organizing into stronger clusters. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, remain weather-aware, and review severe weather shelter plans.

Storm chances continue into Friday with similar timing and risks. Cooler, less humid air arrives Saturday, bringing relief but also a sharp contrast in temperatures.

Additional watches or warnings may be issued Thursday morning. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for the latest updates.
