Newport, North Carolina – Thunderstorms may rattle parts of eastern North Carolina Thursday afternoon as warm, unstable air collides with incoming moisture. Daytime highs near 83°F and gusty winds could turn routine drives into slick commutes across Newport, especially along US-70.

According to the National Weather Service, a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected before 2 p.m. Thursday. Winds from the south will range between 6 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Rain totals should remain under a tenth of an inch, but higher amounts are possible in isolated storms.

Travelers and residents should monitor for quick changes in weather during school pickups and afternoon plans. Visibility could drop briefly during downpours. Lightning and sudden wind gusts may also affect outdoor events or sports practices.

Thursday night clears out, leading to a calm and mostly sunny Friday with highs pushing 88°F. The stretch of warm, dry weather continues through the weekend, with highs nearing 90°F on Saturday and Sunday. Overnight lows will dip to the mid-60s, offering some relief but little chance for rain.

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday bring more sunshine and temps in the upper 80s, signaling a strong spring-to-summer shift. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and check on neighbors as temperatures rise.

Warnings for isolated storms remain in effect through Thursday evening. Updates will follow if additional advisories are issued.
