Providence, Rhode Island – Thunderstorms and heavy rain could disrupt afternoon plans Thursday across Rhode Island, with flash flooding possible on urban roadways like I-95.

According to the National Weather Service, a chance of storms develops mid-morning Thursday, increasing through the afternoon. Gusty winds, lightning, and brief downpours may hit between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., especially in Providence and surrounding cities. While severe weather isn’t expected, low-lying streets and highway underpasses could collect runoff during heavier bursts of rain.

Travelers should use caution on Route 6, I-95, and local streets as visibility may rapidly drop in heavier cells. The chance of precipitation sits near 50%, with totals between a tenth and a quarter inch—though localized areas may see more. Winds will remain under 10 mph but could gust higher near storms.

Conditions improve Thursday night with mostly cloudy skies and lows in the upper 50s. Friday turns partly sunny and warmer, with a high near 78°F and just a slight chance of late-day showers.

The weekend outlook stays unsettled. A chance of showers returns Saturday morning and again late Saturday night, keeping skies mostly cloudy through Sunday. Highs hover in the mid-70s, with lows near 59°F.

Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday bring a return to dry spring weather. Sunshine, highs in the upper 60s, and calm northwest winds mark a quiet start to next week.

Stay weather-aware Thursday, especially during the afternoon commute. Additional advisories may be issued if thunderstorm activity intensifies.
