Sacramento, CA – Northern California residents are facing a volatile weekend of weather, with thunderstorms expected Saturday and high wind gusts returning Sunday, potentially increasing wildfire danger across inland counties.

According to the National Weather Service Sacramento office, thunderstorms carry a 15% to 35% probability Saturday, May 17, across the northern Sacramento Valley and adjacent mountain terrain. Affected areas include Chico, East Quincy, and Oroville. Lightning, small hail, and brief downpours may accompany the storms.

By Sunday, May 18, gusty winds from the north and east are expected to develop across much of the region. Wind gust probabilities exceed 70% in areas like Chico (74%), Yuba City (70%), and Red Bluff (89%). These conditions, coupled with low relative humidity, could increase the risk of fire weather through early next week.

Residents in high-risk areas such as Sacramento, Reno, and Carson City should prepare for wind gusts surpassing 30 MPH. Secure outdoor items, avoid outdoor burns, and monitor local alerts from Cal Fire and NWS. Travel may also be impacted, particularly along the I-5 corridor and mountain passes where visibility and control can be reduced.

Stay weather-aware throughout the weekend as conditions could change rapidly.
