Morehead City, NC – Coastal areas of North Carolina are under a weather alert as heavy rain and a moderate rip current risk threaten communities through the weekend and into early next week. Starting Sunday and lasting through Monday night, excessive rainfall could lead to isolated flooding, especially in urban and low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service, there is a moderate rip current risk for the entire eastern coastline, particularly from 8 a.m. Sunday through Sunday evening. The high surf and rough seas could put beachgoers at risk, making water activities especially dangerous. Anyone planning to visit the beach should exercise caution and be aware of these dangerous conditions.
Rainfall is expected to increase across the region starting Sunday evening, continuing through Monday. Newport and Morehead City will likely experience showers with thunderstorms, which could lead to 1 to 2 inches of rain in a short period. Flash flooding is a potential risk, particularly on roads prone to water pooling or along lower-lying routes. Travelers on highways such as U.S. Route 70 should be aware of standing water and slick conditions.
By Tuesday, rain will continue, with the possibility of additional thunderstorms, and the flood risk remains high. Drivers are advised to stay off the roads during heavy downpours, particularly in flood-prone areas. The NWS will provide additional updates as more information becomes available.
Looking ahead, the forecast for Wednesday through the rest of the week suggests more rain with a drop in temperatures. Expect highs near 75°F through mid-week, and showers likely continuing through Friday. Stay updated on the latest weather conditions via local radio stations or weather apps to stay safe during this unsettled stretch of weather.
