Grand Forks, N.D. – Gusty winds and dry air are combining to create near-critical fire weather conditions across eastern North Dakota today, raising the risk of fast-spreading wildfires.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, winds are shifting to the north-northwest at speeds of 10 to 25 mph. Relative humidity is expected to drop into the 20 to 25 percent range this afternoon, a level that significantly dries out vegetation and increases fire danger. Highs will range from the upper 60s in the north to low 80s in the south.

Areas from Devils Lake to Fargo and Wahpeton are most vulnerable, especially where dry grasses and brush dominate open land. Residents in Grand Forks County and surrounding areas should avoid outdoor burning and any activities that could create sparks, such as using chainsaws or off-road vehicles.

Officials advise having water sources ready, reporting any signs of smoke, and securing trailer chains that could cause roadside fires. These conditions follow a drier-than-normal spring and could persist if no rainfall develops over the weekend.

Fire weather statements may be upgraded later today. Stay tuned to local emergency alerts and check weather.gov/fgf for updates.
