Burlington, VT – Rainfall is soaking much of Vermont this morning and is expected to persist through Saturday, raising the risk of flooding in urban areas and poorly drained locations across the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a flood watch remains in effect for portions of central and southern Vermont through late Saturday night. Rain totals are likely to stay under 2 inches for most locations, but isolated spots in northern and central Vermont still have a 20% to 40% chance of exceeding that threshold.

Counties under the flood watch include Rutland, Windsor, Washington, and parts of Orange. Local roads prone to standing water—especially in Montpelier, Barre, and Brattleboro—could experience nuisance flooding. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid driving through water-covered roads and to monitor local alerts closely.

Stormwater systems could become overwhelmed in urban areas, increasing the risk of basement flooding and travel delays. Residents are advised to clear storm drains, charge electronic devices in case of outages, and prepare for possible disruptions to weekend plans.

Rain is expected to taper off by late Saturday night, but additional watches or advisories could be issued if conditions worsen.
