Minneapolis, Minnesota – Scorching summer-like heat and dangerous winds are converging on Minnesota this Mother’s Day Sunday, bringing a serious wildfire threat to much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday evening for western, central, and southern Minnesota. South to southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, gusting to 35 mph, combined with humidity as low as 15%, could turn a spark into a fast-moving blaze.

Counties at risk include Hennepin, Ramsey, Wright, Anoka, Kandiyohi, Scott, Blue Earth, and Faribault. Conditions are especially critical along corridors like I-94 and U.S. 169, where vegetation is dry and winds funnel quickly.

Outdoor burning is not recommended, and residents are urged to delay any fire-related activities, including grilling or fire pit use, until conditions improve. Fire departments across the state are on alert, and additional Red Flag Warnings may follow if conditions worsen.

Sunday’s high will reach 89°F with sunny skies and gusty winds. This marks one of the hottest Mother’s Day weekends in recent years. Monday and Tuesday continue the summer trend, with highs near 88°F and more gusty wind.

Extended 5-Day Outlook:

  • Saturday: Sunny, high near 78°F.
  • Sunday: Sunny and windy, high 89°F. Critical fire weather conditions.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, high 88°F. Wind gusts up to 30 mph.
  • Tuesday: Sunny, high 90°F. Breezy again.
  • Wednesday: Showers likely, high near 85°F. Relief from dry spell possible.
