Austin, Texas – Severe storms are sweeping across Central Texas early Tuesday, prompting a thunderstorm watch for 35 counties including San Angelo, Waco, and Abilene until 10 a.m. CDT.
According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch includes major counties such as Travis, Bell, Taylor, Tom Green, and Brown. Forecasters warn of wind gusts up to 60 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning through the morning commute.
Communities from Llano to Lampasas and as far west as Sterling and Coke counties are urged to stay alert. Emergency managers in the region advise residents to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid driving during active storms. High winds could snap tree limbs and down power lines, while hail may damage vehicles and roofs.
In urban areas like Austin, Round Rock, and San Angelo, scattered outages and localized street flooding are possible. TXDOT crews are monitoring major roadways including I-35, US 67, and US 84 for debris or lane blockages. Schools in affected areas remain open as of early morning, but officials recommend checking district websites for updates.
Storm activity is expected to shift eastward by late morning. Additional warnings or watches may be issued depending on storm intensity.
